Find your way forward

Standing at the front of each classroom are people I know. They are my friends and colleagues, no matter where they come from. They are united by strong values, problem-solving mindsets, and compassionate leadership. I welcome them back time and time again, providing them with tools, strategies, and the knowledge that I have accumulated through my experience as an educator.

Welcome to Sarah McLean Coaching. Where educators come to find their way forward.

My Story

Hello! I am Sarah. I am an experiential educator and educational leader, and I have been teaching for over 20 years in independent and public schools in Vancouver, Canada and London, England. I am also a certified and accredited coach. I help educators explore their challenges, navigate their responsibilities, overcome barriers, and identify opportunities to move forward.

My journey into coaching for educators has been shaped by an incredibly rewarding teaching career. As a classroom teacher, instructional coach, curriculum designer, professional development facilitator, head of department, and educational leader, I understand the day to day experiences of educators and the multiple roles we take in schools, in our communities and in our homes.

Starting in London, England, I received rigorous education training at the Institute of Education, University of London and earned a master’s degree specializing in best practices in teaching and learning. In London, I taught in diverse classrooms and gained valuable insights into the realities of teaching and leading in the school system. However, it was my time in Vancouver that truly transformed my teaching approach. Immersed in the stunning natural landscapes of British Columbia, I discovered the power of place and place-based learning in captivating students’ attention and igniting their curiosity. Leading a team of educators in a Vancouver school, I prioritized building authentic community partnerships to create engaging and impactful experiential programming and student leadership opportunities for K-12 students.

As I tried to juggle the demands of school while becoming a parent, I was exhausted. Working with a coach introduced me to the power of a really good conversation. Setting aside time to really examine what was going on and focus on what I wanted was incredibly valuable. Coaching helped me identify what mattered most and guided me to towards tools and strategies to help navigate my many responsibilities. This experience is the reason why I became a coach. My goal is to help educators thrive in their profession, so they can continue making a profound difference in the lives of their students and the communities they are part of. Becoming your best professional self begins with taking care of yourself and those closest to you. When I am not teaching or coaching, you will find me exploring the local forest trails and beaches with my 9- and 7-year-old boys, testing out a new baking recipe, listening to a podcast on a run in my neighbourhood, or sitting down with a good book and a cup of Yorkshire tea.

My Philosophy

I believe in the transformative power of listening, paying attention, and building authentic relationships as the foundation for igniting inspiration and change within ourselves, our schools, and our communities. My goal is to work in partnership with classroom teachers, experiential educators, and educational leaders, to facilitate intentional and authentic transformation for good. Coaching for educators with an educator is professional development. It involves intentionally pausing, asking questions about patterns, habits, challenges, and experiences, and exploring opportunities to make changes.

Throughout my career, I have come to understand that educators often experience cycles of feeling drained and inspired, and it is through these cycles that we grow and evolve to better serve our students. Educators are energized when they see their students flourish in the classroom, in the field, and again after they go out into the world – that is why we became educators in the first place. I want educators to feel proud of the hard work they do to enable student success and be excited for the possibilities ahead. This can often be hard to see when immersed in the day-to-day business of classroom teaching, marking, deadlines, organizing trips, and attending meetings.

My Coaching Core Values

  • I practice making space to dig deep: setting aside time to explore realities, challenge perspectives, consider alternatives and imagine futures, helping you find your way.
  • I believe in expanding your toolkit: helping you identify the power within yourself and your team to make the next best decision, equipping you with tools for reflection, growth, leadership, and courage to keep going and move forward.
  • I show up with a belief in paying it forward: supporting you with kindness, grace and a commitment to positive change and justice in our communities, lighting a fire in you to pay that energy forward in the good work that you do.

Coaching

Being an educator just like you are, makes me uniquely positioned to helping you find your way forward as your coach. Prioritizing relationships, engaging in deep conversation, and building tools for collaborative practice are at the centre of my approach to teaching and educational leadership, and I bring those same values into my coaching practice.
  • Helping teachers navigate the day-to-day pressures they face as they balance work and life in an ever-changing educational landscape.
  • Encouraging educational leaders to align their leadership practice with their values and figure out how to lead their teams with authenticity and compassion.
  • Working alongside new and evolving educational teams, helping them identify their purpose, and facilitating collaborative practices to help them move forward on their journey together.
  • Supporting experiential education teams as they explore possibilities for innovative programming and creative leadership.

Ian Yen

“One of Sarah's greatest strengths was her ability to ask thought-provoking questions. She guided me through a process of self-reflection, allowing me the necessary time and space to contemplate how I would feel once I overcame the obstacles and challenges that held me back. Her insightful questioning encouraged me to dig deep within myself and explore new perspectives, which ultimately led to significant personal growth. Sarah's coaching had a lasting impact on me and the decisions I made in my recent past. Although I may not have reached my desired destination yet, I am filled with excitement and hope because I have taken the necessary steps forward, even when they felt difficult. Sarah's guidance and support instilled in me the courage to embrace change and step outside of my comfort zone.”

“Sarah is an extremely calm, measured and experienced educational professional. I felt extremely well supported during my coaching experience. Sarah's advice was useful and relevant to my specific career based situation. I came away from my session with Sarah fully informed and with plenty to think about and consider. She lifted the brain fog I had been experiencing regarding a rather tricky career based situation which really helped me during the process itself and my next steps.”
Jane Woods

“For a few months, I was lucky to be part of a Professional Learning Community of which Sarah was a facilitator and Professional Leader. She was the most impressive component of this group, as she had wonderful ways with which to help us focus on the "prize" and meet our agenda. I hope to learn more from her in the future as an Educational Leader myself. Her toolkit and way of being amongst Educators was outstanding.”
Kristin Shipler

Noah Clark
Math & Science Teacher, Mulgrave School, BC, Canada
“Working with Sarah was relaxing and calming and offered me tremendous clarity on what I want and need in the next steps of my career. Sarah helped me identify and prioritize what I am really seeking from both a job and the community that surrounds it. As a result, within days of receiving a summary from Sarah of our most recent work together, I had the confidence to decline a job offer because it didn't match those priorities we had established together. This was both comforting and encouraging and I feel very grateful to have been able to work with Sarah."
Shelly Gibson
Director of Staff Development, Chewonki Foundation, ME
“Sarah is an attentive listener who asks skillful questions that really helped me get to the root of the barriers in my way. She prompted me in a gentle way that also made me feel like I was the one coming up with the answers to my own questions, instead of being given advice, which was empowering. Sarah also listens without judgement; I always feel comfortable to share what's really coming to mind. I'm grateful for the support Sarah has given me, and I look forward to continuing to work with her. She is very talented at what she does!”
Ashley Beatty

Sarah comes to every workshop, session, etc., ready with engaging content, is able to pivot on the fly when circumstances (ie. tech) may need it, and is really engaging as a leader. I've always felt encouraged by Sarah to actively participate in sessions she's led. Her unique skill sets, combined with her extensive experience, puts her in the top class of facilitators.”
